student's specific learning needs and style.

The SOS Reading Approach is not a curriculum, making it unique
among reading programs. Rather than dictating how the framework
should be used, we offer classes and lectures to show teachers to show to show teachers and administrators how to individualize the

the program to make it relevant and easy to implement.

Explanation
The SOS Reading Approach team understands that most educators
are saturated with program offers promising to raise test scores
and solve students' reading problems. We also are aware that most
educators have little interest - or time - for attending sessions that
are are irrelevant to immediate classroom issues. Our team of
certified teachers provides training based on a few core truths of
teaching literacy:

  •  No single curriculum can teach every student to read

  •  Reading does not come naturally

  •  A reading program should be a balance of phonics, sight
     words, comprehension and writing

  •  Without reading fluency, there is no comprehension

The SOS Reading Approach provides ongoing support and
instruction to educators based on our own experience as
teachers and reading specialists. We make sure that everyone
using the SOS Reading Approach is equipped with:

  •  Knowledge of the balanced, logical sequence of skills
that students must master to be proficient readers

  •  Strategies to help struggling readers

  •  Activities you can actually use in the classroom

  •  Understanding of how to use resources available in the
classroom to develop a balanced reading program

  •  Skills for reaching students who are not mastering the
     required sequence of skills

Testimonials
"I was really nervous when I started my first year teaching. I had
taken all the necessary classes, but I still had no idea how to
teach a student how to read. My mentor showed me the SOS
approach and I felt like I did have the tools to be an effective
reading teacher. It gave me an outline of the skills to teach but
allowed me to be creative with how I taught them. My students
are doing great!"

                                           Rebecca Hanes, First grade teacher

"With SOS I can actually teach the way I want knowing I am hitting
on the correct skills and still using my creativity. NO SCRIPT, YEAH!"

                                                      Susan Nelson, EIP teacher
